B2 Gold Wins Wishbone

Prior Lake Squirt B2 Gold won their first tournament of the year going 5-0 with wins over Tartan (9-4), Wayzata (6-1), Anoka (6-1), Shakopee (7-2) and La Crescent (2-1) in a nail-bitter final.  The team outscored their opponents for the tournament 30-9 with Tyler Sporney leading B2 Gold with 15 goals and 2 assists. Overall, coaches were impressed with the kids hustle and team cohesion. Coach Wollenberg stated, “You never know what you are going to get with a new team just getting to know each and coming in to the tournament not having played an actual game; but the kids really came out and played as a team”.  In all, nine different players scored for Prior Lake giving the team very good dispersion of shots and opportunities; something all coaches agreed they would like to see continue throughout the year.

B2 Gold has since opened their District 6 schedule with a home win against Edina Black (4-3) to stay unbeaten. While the Edina win is nice to have, the team looked slower than they did in the Wishbone. In the post-game press conference, coaches would have liked to see the same hustle as in the tournament. Coach Ruprecht said, “Hustle and effort is something we are going to continue to work on throughout the season. It is something the kids control and we need to see consistent effort for the full 36 minutes. We were somewhat lucky to get the win against Edina – we (coaches) would have liked to see a little bit more effort – but a win is a win and we will learn from it”. Still, scoring was distributed between Sporney (2), Wollenberg (1) and Campbell (1) a trend that continues to pay dividends and speaks to an unselfish team bond.

B2 Gold has Chaska/Chan upcoming on Dec. 5th followed by what will be a challenging tournament in Cloquet, MN battling Iron Range teams that will require a full team effort. All coaches agree they have been impressed with the kids, the unselfish play and drive to improve. Coach Westrum said, “This is a very talented team, it is our job as coaches to continue to improve and motivate. I am very excited about the season”.
